Ironall Dark: Cutting - what is a good way to cut this paper? Is there an easier dark paper to cut?

Iron-all for darks is great paper with the exception of cutting. I use a rotary cutter which is fine for straight lines, but to cut shapes? Ugh! What's the next softest paper that can be cut with scissors or exacto knife, or better, a way to cut iron-all? Thanks, Skin.

Couple of times I forgot to print registration marks with the design, luckily they were relatively simple designs and I ended it up with an exacto knife.
But the easier and better is a cutter.
I have seen a video somewhere on the Internet were a guy was cutting a pretty complicated design ( to be cut by hand)with an exacto knife, and the guy was cutting it as if he were a Roland GR-24 :)
Regrettably I can not remember where I saw it.

You have figured out how to cut IYA Dark (ironall dark) with a cutter?????

Cool!!!
Do you mind sharing your settings and any other tips you have?:)

...just used a pair of Fabric Scissors on IYA Dark (ironall dark) last night.
Worked GREAT!.....intricate cutting too!

I purchased a pair of Quality dressmaking scissors about 15? years ago called MARKS Knife Edge...made in Brazil. They were the best out at the time...well, at least at Joann Fabrics.
They were about 50 dollars.
I was told to treat them delicately....but over the years have dropped them a few times. LOL.......they still cut like a dream! :)

I do not think that the company(MARKS) is over here in the U.S.A. anymore......so here is a link to some "knife edge" scissors that are sold at Joann's now...
Gingher 10" Knife Edge Bent Trimmers
http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat3194&PRODID=prd31919

My MARKS Knife Edge are almost identical to these but are 8" not 10".....that seems a little too large to do intricate cutting.
They even make 5" Knife Edge scissors that I am going to purchase as well. :)

...I am still going to try to figure out how to contour cut IYA Dark (ironall dark) on my Graphtec cutter........ hopefully I will figure it out soon.

I have a little Stika, so it doesn't have fancy digital depth meters, etc., but all I did was put my printed on paper on a piece of carrier stuff and dialed the knife depth down a little. The weeding was really easy. That's why I wonder if I got a countfeit batch!
No.....Mike is an Honest person and runs an Honest business. :)

I have never heard of a "black line" on the back of an IYA product......maybe this is something new...??
anyone???

I read that another name for Ironall was Jetwear IYA Dark, and that's what I ordered from tshirtsupplies.com. It has a black line on it. Did I order the wrong thing?
No....you ordered the right paper......
Actually the REAL name for "ironall dark" IS IYA dark.
(manufactured by IYA technologies)

Hey Mike,

Just in case you miss the post in the other thread. The last batch of IYA Dark does contain a black line - it was change from the solid color due to some confusion w/ print versus back side.

The bluegrid dark is made by Arkwright and has completely different characteristics.

Again, congrats on the cut - it sometimes (like most things) takes a few practice runs before finding the settings that work best.

Regards,
Mike

Whew! That's good to know. I liked a lot of things about the bluegrid (by Arkwright) but didn't like how thick and crinkly it was. I hated the other one you mentioned, couldn't get it to stick, and I also got bubbles. Anyway, I'm hoping to stick with this new paper - thanks for confirming the black line. All you people are the greatest. I think I'll use a carrier sheet from now on, as I liked how kept the paper nice and stiff for the cutter. Thanks for the feedback!

Inktra for dark from Stahls. It contour cuts and weeds really nice and easy. It is not as soft and stretchy as Ironall for dark. It is softer, stretchier and presses easier than Alpha gold. It has a matte finish. So far it has survived the washer and hot dryer setting the first time. I thought that Inktra brand is another alias for Ironall but it does not seem to be an Ironall for dark. It does not have printing problem like others claim with Ironall for dark.

Inktra and Inktra Opaque are not Ironall and Ironall Dark.

According to the Hyatt website: Hyatt Innovative Solutions only "Inktra Stretch" at Stahl's is an Ironall/IYA product. :)

Glad to hear you found a paper that cuts and washes well. :)

I do believe that Inktra DARK is Neenah's Jet opaque unless they have switched it out to a paper manufactured by JOTO......Paropy dark.
(at least last year at this time this was the case(inktra dark=JetOpaque)......maybe imprintables can chime in since they are in close contact w/ stahls???...??....Josh??)

OK MIKE...:) we really need the "paper naming tool"!!!!!!!!!!:)
.....it's starting again. LOL

The carrier I'm referring to is cut from a big role that I got from Imprintables.com - the same place I got my little stika. It is sticky, and looks like acetate.
Thanks for the info!:)

I will be using the Cricut 12x24 carrier w/ the IYA Dark.

I received some cutter settings from IYA Technologies...
These settings are for the Roland gx24...

Penforce setting at 0
Blade force 140-150gf
Speed( depending on font size) 15-50cm/s

.....they said that these setting should work on my Graphtec CE5000-60 since they are comparable cutters.

I forgot to ask you what blade you are using... 45° or 60° ??
(I have asked IYA Tech as well and I am waiting on their answer)

Hello All,

If I didn't go off the map and decide to open a restaurant, I may be close to finishing the product/paper naming matching tool...I figure I have about 90% in my head, now if I could sit down and make the matrix...after all it is only 2 years in the making.

That said, the Stahl's Inktra Dark is Neenah Jet Opqaue...what we call JetWear Dark. I know Luis had made some comments on being the best to cut, but also alternate views on the Neenah paper...I'm not sure if it is perspective, but if anyone has any paper matching questions, I'll help on an individual level until we are able to produce the paper naming tool.

As always, we'll share the exact make/MFG of all our papers and we have started to make it easier when we re-introduced the IYA paper, which we decided to be upfront and just state the MFG, rather then continue w/ our naming and confusing the enduser.

Lastly, we do carry paper from all US MFGS, and in the upcoming months, we plan to associate them w/ the MFG name, but also plan to retain the use of the JetWear and TranferWear names, as they are Trademarked and predate any paper naming on the market. So, for example, we will probably change the name of JetWear Dark to JetWear JetOpaque, which is Neenah's name. In addition, we will add all other known names of this paper based on our knowledge.

We would enjoy the feedback from the community....would this be a useful use of our resources?

Hope all is well, the restaurant is expected to open in AUG, after that, I'll be able to devote more time to the very exciting upcoming months in the Heat Transfer market.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi i am new to this forum and brand new to heat transfer so I have a lot to learn. Our company recently purchased a new ROLAND GX-24 and some Dark Heat Transfer paper from China.

I have not seen the Ironall Dark but from what is being described it sounds very similar to the product i just tested in our plotter. It is quite flexible and stretchy and the first time I attempted to cut it it did not cut properly it was like it was cutting a dashed line.

So i did some reading for about one and a half hours and found some info and gave it a go and I seem to have had much better success this time.

The settings I used were the following and it cut all the way through this time. Please note I only cut out a rectangle box.

Machine: Roland GX-24
Blade: Standard blade that cam with machine I think its 45 degrees
Off-set: 0.25mm
Pressure: 130g
Blade sticking out of holder: 0.5mm (approximately)

See page 56 in your GX-24 manual "Rough estimate for the Amount of Blade Extension"

Anyway this worked well for this cut. I will try a more complex cut tomorrow and see what happens then.

Cheers

Paul

Its just a generic brand from a Chinese Company, but it was not cheap and it is very soft, thin and flexible. Cost was about $0.52 USD per/pc for an A4 sheet.

I have not washed it yet. I only just managed to make my first good quality successful transfers today. I was pressing it too hard. Backed off the pressure and wow what a difference.

I was using and old 100% cotton t-shirt to test on so not chance of running dye.

I will leave it for 24hrs and than run it through a normal wash to see what happens.

Does anyone know how standard Dye based EPSON ink will go with dark transfer paper? Will so stay fast or wash out?

I did order some hybrid pigment ink and some blank cartridges for my EPSON Artisan 1430 as I read on this forum that pigment ink is better for heat transfer printing.

I have yet to test it as I am waiting for the new blank cartridges to arrive.

I was also going to get a custom color profile completed and a custom ICC profile complete on on the hybrid ink on this paper so we can print accurate colors.

There is a company in Australia who does colour profiling and custom ICC profiles for about $65 USD a pop.
