A customer sent me a .cdr file, and I'm thinking "cool, finally", because I prefer Corel Draw, and currently use X3. BUT, for some reason it's not opening, lol. I use X3, and the file they sent me is X3 .cdr file. Any ideas why it won't open?

I see from another post you made earlier that you seem to be having a few pc problems (fonts not installing and others not displaying correctly) and now you can't open a Corel file. Are you having any other problems that you know of. Sometimes, multiple odd unrelated pc issues, turn out to be pc problems. Malware, missing or corrupted DLL files, registry errors etc. Can you send your file to somebody else and see if they have any problems opening it. Gotta start somewhere. 1st things first prove your pc is not the problem before you start making any changes. Either open the file on another pc or send it to someone else who has Corel. Good luck.

I tried loading another font and it installed fine, and I tried opening this .cdr file on my other computer and it wouldn't open up there either.

As far as the font problem, I've had this same problem with fonts in the past; looks like it installs but has the "not found" next to it in the font list.

Thanks Jack, but I don't really need it converted because it's the same X3 file that I use. It just won't open for some reason. It acts like it's trying to, as it takes a minute to do so, but then nothing is there.

If it does open for you, does it give you an "untitled #" at the top of corel? or does it give you the file name??

Good chances its not really saved as an X3 file.. most likely its a higher version of corel.. I know when I send things over to my cutter PC, it has x5 on it and I dont save as an X5 file it will do the same thing...

Just a thought...

or does it give you an "I/O" error when opening?

We have had this happen too. When we were using X5 (now X6) we would save for an associate in X3 (that was their system) and they had no problems. When we sent them a file saved in X5 it would try to open for them in X3 but wouldn't until we corrected the save on our end.

We in X6 have also had cdr's downloaded to us which wouldn't open but appeared to try. They wouldn't open or import. We took the file into AI and it opened. Then saved it to AI and imported it back to X6 successfully. We've also had this happen with some .eps files for some reason. Maybe a software geek could chime in and explain some of this for us.

If you can, perhaps have the source resend the file specifically keyed for X3 AND have them save and send as AI, eps or even png (you could possibly retrace to vector). Good luck!
