Does anybody know of a place that will take scrap vinyl for recycling purpose? I hate throwing it all away, I feel guilty.

Thanks!

vinyl is very hard to recycle.
the problem is that sign vinyl is "contaminated" with adhesive which make it unrecyclable. Most of what you will find are companies that are looking for somewhat clean pvc scrap, such as trim cuts from things like packaging containers like clam shells and blister packs for example.
the company I work from on my "day job" deals with this everyday. We have worked for years trying to find someone to take our scrap and the only one that we have found just incenerates the material to generate electricity. (in a controlled environment since pvc is toxic.)
You have to generate this stuff by the ton and store it until you do since they only want truck loads.

Re: Alternative Uses for Scrap Banner

I have found that there really isn't much that is "too small" as even on the smallest pieces, I can make polka dots of various sizes. I have contacted some of the local sign shops here to see if they sell off their scraps and I have always gotten a "no" response. If anyone in the St. Louis, MO area has scraps, please contact me and I would be happy to work with you on a sale as crafters like me LOVE them!

I bag all my scraps 1"-6" and send to my Mom. She owns a florist and uses a Cricut cutter to cut out letters and other items from my scraps. She even cuts out eyes for balloon characters. Anything under 1" gets trashed but that's very little.

You may want to post an ad on Craigslist if they have a scrapbooking or crafts section. I bet you'll find plenty of takers who will gladly come to your shop and pick up your scraps on a regular basis.

If giving vinyl scraps to schools be sure to advise the teachers that the material may contain phthalates in concentrations higher than US federal standards allow for use by children (other countries may have similar restrictions). Phthalate compounds are substances now banned in most items for use by children under 12.

Additionally, when in scrap form small children may chew on it, and it's a serious choking hazard. If swallowed it will block the airway and could cause suffocation. Sadly, there are known instances of this occurring. Teachers can use it to make finished projects, if the projects are out of the reach of children, but it should never be directly used by children.

Oracal makes a point of the DEHP concentrations in their safety sheets for 631, 651, and many other of their products.
