It is most likely a 20amp plug. You need a dedicated 20 amp circuit with appropriate wall receptacle. Call an electrician, or atleast get some marshmallows ready.

yup. you can either change the plug or change the wall outlet. but it's going to be a 20amp plug.

what type of flash unit? it may not actually be drawing 20 amps.

 

You can't just change the plug. They put that plug on the unit for a reason... so you will use a 20amp outlet with the correct gauge wire and avoid turning your shop into a structure fire.

I appreciate your help guys but I am still struggling.

I have the ODYSSEY Mercury Flash Dryer, on its cord it says 12/3 20A. 125v.

Basically it has a special type of plug, one of the pins is horizontal so it won't fit into the wall outlet.

What are my options here?

you need a 20 amp wall outlet.

if you understand electrical, you can shut off your breaker, and swap out the outlet.

the friendly folks at your neighborhood big box store can show you which outlet to buy.

if you DO NOT know how to work with electrical, then you should pay a licensed electrictian to come and do it for you.

What I meant was that just by replacing the wall outlet with a 20amp outlet should be sufficient or do I need to replace the house wiring for that outlet also!!?

it should be #12 wire with a 20 amp breaker. after you turn off the breaker and pull the recptical, you should be able to see the writing on the wire. it will read 12awg or 14awg (maybe 10awg, but i doubt it) depending on the wire. you need to have at least 12awg for 20 amps. 10awg would be good too especially if its far away from the breaker...

If the breaker on that outlet is a 20 amp breaker, then it's likely safe to swap the outlet with one that can take the plug on your flash. It depends a lot on how old the wiring is. I can tell you on older houses that 15 amp/14 gauge wire was common, in which case it isn't safe to do. I know my mother's house was built in 1960 and has 15 amp circuits. I owned a house built in 1940 that still had wiring with cloth-and-rubber insulation, and the one I'm in was rewired just before I bought it and I believe still had the old knob-and-spool wiring in it up until then.
Like others have said, if you don't understand what you're doing, you might want to get an electrician.

 

If you don't do the electrical thing properly don't forget the graham crackers and Hershey's chocolate bars. If you have the marshmallows there is no sense not having s'mores while you are waiting for the fire dept.
