Default Layer printing with water base

I was doing a run of shirts for an event where we will be selling shirts. I tried to lay down some red words on top of a big black design. The red did not show up at all over the black ink but popped on the parts that were not black.

My questions are
1) should I have added discharge to the red ink so it show up?
2) Made the design where the words over the black part were cut out of the black and just used micro reg to fit it right in? ( not sure the terminology for what i am trying to say)
3) can you even do this or do I need to use a different ink for the red?

Thanks for yalls help

#2.

#1 wouldn't work because you can't discharge (black) ink. You can only discharge fabric.

what color are the shirts and what brand ink are you using.

I wasn't discharging the ink. I wasn't sure if that work or not. The shirt was white and it's the CCI water base inks. My mix was dead on but it just wouldn't show up on the black.

Knock out the black in the logo, so your not overprinting, the red will than pop off the white of the shirt
