Default Buying a cutter vs. Transfer Express Names & Numbers

We buy a large amount of names and numbers during little league season and were thinking of making our own. But I looked at the material and unless I'm mistaken, it's just as expensive to make your own vs. having TE make them.

Question is: Is it worth it to make your own?

It will mostly save you time specially the weeding part.
Like you said the price is about the same.
and there will always be that number that you don't have and have wait for the numbers to arrive.

I would think that with the cost of the labor to make your own that is makes more sense to purchase them from Transfer Express. You can always cut your own in an emergency.

I cut my own, it’s just easier to me to start cutting right away and not having to order and wait.

We cut or print/cut our own with a VersaCamm. It saves on waiting, but then again we don't do that many name/number drops.

If you are cutting regularly or do several one-offs, then it makes sense to own a cutter. But if you don't cut very often or are too busy to cut and weed yourself, it makes more sense to order it from TE or whoever you deal with. If you're doing it as a business, crunch the numbers and see what makes sense for you. If it's a hobby, do what you feel comfortable with. I hope this makes sense.

We sometimes do around 800 LL jerseys at start of their season. We use both premade and make our own transfers. We always end up cutting a lot on our plotter/cutter and would never survive without it. You don’t want a player to not have their jersey on opening day because you ran short on prints.

I guess I was just shocked that after buying a cutter, and doing all of the cutting weeding yourself that you would spend just as much $$ making your own (plus all of the work that goes with it) as if you ordered your names and numbers. Basically it would never pay for itself.

I do understand that if you mess up a name that you have the tools on hand to fix it right away, it just seems to be a steep investment for that purpose.

You will find a lot of uses for it especially for making small custom orders

the new cameo plus is 15" wide and will be only $399 when it comes out in jan

a 12" wide cameo 4 is $299

a 12" wide cameo 3 is $199
but this one cuts slower, large numbers/names would cut still cut pretty fast though

What brand cutter do you use?

I will add one more thought, based on my experience. For what that's worth. Haha! I started cutting in my shop with just a Cameo years and years ago. I did mostly embroidery and only added a cutter for the once-in-a-blue-moon applique orders. Well, soon the embroidery gave way to heat printing. But I wore through 2 Cameos in 18 months. If you're doing anything beyond hobby or just a few cuts here and there, I highly suggest you get a cutter that is made for it. You'll appreciate the difference. And if you're doing that much cutting, you may as well go just a bit further and buy something with a Servo motor so that you can get better, faster cuts. Servos are really quiet compared to the cheaper stepper motors, too. That may not be where you're headed, but I really didn't anticipate I'd be here now with the addition of several heat presses a Graphtec cutter, and now adding a Versacam to my shop. And the embroidery, well, it's on the way out the door.
