Have any of you guys ever experimented with laying a thin white base on white shirts? It would be nice to get them to "pop" like the dark color shirts.

I wouldn't suggest it.. Here are some techniques you could try

-NeoTreat light pretreat (for CMYK) one or two pass of color
-two passes of color no pretreat

try both techniques and do a wash test

remember to cure the 2nd pass of color (even though there is no white ink cure it the same way)

This is definitely something you could try. If you wanted a thing white underbase for your colors you could use a 720x360 white underbase. This will give you a very quick underbase (20-30 seconds) and use the white shirt profile for the print. Would be a good experiment.
