Depends if it's a raster/pixel based image or vector based? For raster use a psd or png file with transparent backgrounds if working out of photoshop. For vector you can use eps, PDF, or ai if working out of Illustrator. Personally I convert all my vector files to png at 300dpi with transparent background.
