I like my tablet from Monoprice so far but I haven't used it extensively. From what I've read in other reviews, it's better than a Bamboo but not as good as an Intuos. It requires a battery in the pen, but that hasn't made a difference to me at all. I read so many bad reviews for the Intuos4 because the nibs wear down in hours on the "faux paper" surface that I spent quite some time trying to find a brand new Intuos3 at a good price, but I never found one. I got the 10 x 6.25 with 8 physical hotkeys.

I've used Wacom tablets for years.
The bamboo I just got for about $99.
The super cheapy $79 Wacom lasted a couple of weeks, then the poorly attached mini USB plug disintegrated.
I do a lot of design work, use the smallest tablet, and even then minimize the space the pen affects.
So do not think "bigger is better".
Pen tablets SAVED my right arm.
OMG how I hate using a mouse!

I believe the Samsung Series 7 Slate Tablet makes the very best that Wacom has to offer obsolete. Buy the Samsung Series 7 Slate with stylus and touchscreen support for about $1200. You're getting a modern tablet PC along with your drawing surface, all rolled into one. Or you could buy the Cintiq for over 2 thousand and have only a drawing surface which still needs a computer to operate. Later this year with Windows 8 will come devices that will be even better than the Samsung device. I have a Wacom medium size pad now. It is a seriously high quality product, but drawing on that while looking at a computer screen is an entirely different experience than drawing directly on the tablet PC (I have an HP TouchSmart TM2) and using my fingers to zoom and pan and access interface elements in whatever program I'm using.

When Windows 8 comes out we will see tablets probably as thin as an ipad but with full Windows OS, stylus, and detachable keyboard. The best of all worlds. Drawing surface, powerful computer, laptop, and slate for portability. These will be the best devices ever made for graphic artists.

I have this one right now.
Because I am so used to using tablets, I like it just fine.
I did make a little cardboard cover to keep the cord from pulling out and protect the delicate mini USB port.
I use it with Corel Draw, and everything else I do.

I'll second the drawing tablet from Monoprice. $48 10x6.25 drawing area, 8 hotkeys on the left (I'm left handed and they are not in my way when using the tablet). 16 hot-areas at the top of the tablet. All can be programmed to do your bidding.
Been using mine for a few months now, the pen (with a battery) has a nice balanced feel. I also bought some extra nibs for the pen, have not needed to change one yet (10 for .76 cents).

I was very close to getting the next size down from Monoprice until I noticed that the 10" one has a higher resolution sensitivity than the 8" and smaller. I'm glad to see they're finally selling nibs.

Monoprice tablets are rebranded UC Logic tablets, so you can get the most up-to-date drivers from the UC Logic website. I have read comments that say that "more features" are unlocked in some programs if you install Wacom drivers, then the Monoprice tablet drivers. I have not personally tried this, as I hate having unused active-on-boot software floating about in my computer. Also I use GimPhoto/GimPad and not Photoshop.

I like the buttons and haven't "accidentally hit them" so far, but I'm right handed. I'm really not sure if there's any significant difference. I think some people either don't care about the buttons or think that modern technology should be entirely touch sensitive with no physical buttons.
