Is there a nice and easy way to make "just a photo" printed onto a t-shirt (see attached image) look a bit more professional and "designed" instead of home made?

I'm talking about small things like adding a border, applying some filter, adding some text above, below or onto the image, etc.

Please share some example if you have any or know of any.

first let me say I'm no pro at this however my opinion
fade the edges and take away the "block" let it have an uneven faded sort of edge all the way around.
Hope you "get" what I mean?

You can also try and posterize the photo if you want a more graphic look. Corel Draw has a posterize option but I prefer to do it manually like we did with film in the old days...

If your in Photoshop - auto correct the color to remove the tungsten light (orange) or adjust you levels (there are presets) to make your whites pop, which reduces the background.

for something like that,
i would do a retro-postcard look with some of that half-script text in the upper right
search for images of retro postcards for ideas on text and look

there are many filters/tutorials on getting a retro-style

You need to break that uniform look. How you do it , it is a design choice. You can do it with objects or with text, effect....

I use software called Easy frame EasyFrame - give your image an edge

It's free & only works on a Mac. Auto FX used to have frames too & there are probably others.
