I was asked to put 2 words on 24 shirt backs I said 2 bucks a shirt.. he provided the shirts.. the he want 25 more which I bought at 2.83 each and also 2 words above the front pocket. I charged him 6 a piece for those. So that 48 plus 150 equaling 200$..... Now is that to cheap or whats the rule of thumb. Because now I think he may go sell theses and I worked to hard with 4 color press and and flash unit to cure.... Help me for my next job please and I work alone out of my basement

That's a little cheap but not too far off. It was only a few shirts. You have to start somewhere and save the profits to get better equipment.
well to me if he wanted 2 locations then your imprinting costs about $1.58 per swipe location for the 25 he wanted you to do. Now I would say that since he ordered almost 4 dozen then Yeah I can say your in the price range. I would charge about the same since we always base our prices on the overall pieces and that sounds like its within range.
About a 1/3 too low in my book. What tools do you use to price? Are you just winging it, using a price grid, looking at others online pricing, using a spreadsheet or just off the top of your head?

Years ago I created a Excel spread sheet tool to help people understand some basic concepts of pricing. While the tool is not meant to be used for pricing, it will allow you to verify if you are pricing in the range you need to in order to make money. If you want it, it is free to download and use. You need to figure out a what your costs are then build a pricing grid around that.

How long did it take to make the screen? To clean the screen? To prep the artwork? To print the shirts? How many shirts an hour can you do curing on a flash?

If you did undercharge? Well too bad. Call it tuition - learn and move on.

As for the client selling the shirts? You should hope so! When your clients make money you make money.
dont you charge for print set-up costs?? i.e. the screens, for small jobs like that you are better off just vinyl pressing them ...no set-up costs...

The file is saying its password protected and cannot be opened.
Is anyone else having this problem?
I am using a windows phone to try access it but it has excel on it.
Might have to use computer to open it. I been thinking about how jobs will be priced so this file could be an ideal starting point
got it working on computer.
interesting to see. i wouldnt of calculated the running costs, would of never crossed my mind.
well saying that, once i was in business maybe i would of. need the bills paying.

very interesting, has helped me a lot. saved a copy for future reference.
so many things to think about. I've been researching for over a month I think and still no-where near even considering starting. So much to think about

I've done 10 t-shirt jobs on the press. Just realize you need to quote it based on time, not the number of shirts.

If it takes an hour to make the screen, setup the press and print it - what is your labor rate for an hour of shop time? $45? $60? $90?

You need to do the math and figure that out.

If your shop rate is $60/hour and its a one hour job, look at it as (cost of shirts + markup) + (shop rate * estimated time)

If 10 shirts + markup is $40 and its going to take one hour to produce in a $60/hour shop then you've got a $10 shirt.

I don't like this method of quoting, but for things like this its a relatively safe way to run a quick quote.
For saving some time on basic screens here's someone using vinyl instead of emulsion:

Either way a vinyl cutter will probably not be a bad investment, you can also offer heat press vinyl for people who just want names or a pocket logo with no minimums or set-up fees (it's up to you to scale your pricing so you're still making some money on one-offs) as well as decals or contour-cut transfers (get a cutter with a registration eye!)
so much help THANK YOU!! do you have a cutter in mind?
Can anyone tell me, how complex can vinyl designs be?
I am looking for it to be my primary method of printing to start but need to know the limitations.
Can't really afford to invest in dtg at start up although I would love to
The main issue with vinyl is the weeding. You can do a very complex cut with it but then the time it takes to weed it will drive you crazy after awhile. This is fine for someone who wants a single color one-off, but quickly becomes an unprofitable waste of time for large production (outsource it!). Also it's got a "heavy hand" (it's like a big sticker on the shirt rather than "feels like part of the fabric" like screen prints. Plastisol is more noticeable than water based, for the most part, but far softer than vinyl or dark fabric heat transfers.

As far as using vinyl on your screens instead of emulsion, you would just have to try and see how detailed you can make it. It's not a real substitute for proper screen burning, but looks to me like a good way to screen print more basic things like custom names without having to go through a full setup, burn, and reclaim.
i used to pay for this stuff more.
before i got my own equipment
