What type and size computer are you using?

2059 Views 15 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  GraphicGuy
We are just getting into the screen printing and embroidery business and I was wondering what type of computer laptop or desktop and what size processor, ram, and hard drives everyone was using.

I was thinking of going with a laptop for when going to meet with customers and having a extra monitor at the home office for design and everything else.

Thanks for any info you guys/gals can share.

I run a laptop, desktop ...both on XP...minimum 2m ram, 400G hard drive.. most any of the average computers will work. You need to be aware that at present time there are no drivers for some software and hardware to work with Win 7
Thanks for the heads up on the Windows 7. I think I remember reading that somewhere before.
In my opinion, true graphic designers use mac.. what's even better these days is that the new macs can run both windows os and mac os either one at a time or simultaneously. This way you never need to re purchase and mac versions of windows software that u may have. This is my set up...

I use the biggest monitor Mac offers

Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro4,1
Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.93 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per processor): 8 MB
Memory: 16 GB
Processor Interconnect Speed: 6.4 GT/s

I am running 2 desktops and 2 laptops with Windblows 7, no issues with any mainstream software applications.

Main designing boxes are quad core, 8 gigs of ram, 2T's of hard drive storage per machine.

However you can design on machines way less powerful than what I am using, per the first response post in this thread.

Getting customers before spending any money is a mantra!
At work I use an Apple iMac 27" 2.8GHz Intel i7 QuadCore, 1TB HD, 8GB ram I'm a designer/illustrator. At home, freelance designer/illustrator and I use a 20" iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.16 GHz, 8GB ram. Both are wonderful machines. I send all graphics to customers via email, files to printers via ftp (if they're over 2mb). If you are traveling and will meet FTF with clients, then perhaps a laptop would good for showing files and graphics. For design work, either of my machines get the job done, the smaller imac is nearly 4 now and works just fine with all of my design and illy software. Always check compatibility for software and your particular system software and hardware BEFORE buying. Apple Snow Leopard OS 10.6.3 was unable to drive my Kyocera color laser printer. Apple and Kyocera took turns blaming each other, I ended up getting rid of the Kyocera and getting a Brother.

Some of my equipment would not run on Mac so that was not even an option.

I found this info on CNET which is why I decided to go with a Dell Studio. Also I found a Dell promo code that allowed me to max out a lot of the stats. I also purchased two 20" monitors for dual monitors (will never go back).

Details:
Dell Studio
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU @ 3.00
8 GB Ram
Windows Vista Home Premium - 32 Bit

I think it's important to point out that if you're going to be investing in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, don't go getting a bargain PC or Mac mini thinking that it's going to be ok. Each new version of Adobe products requires a faster machine to run it. It's terrible. I wanted to upgrade to CS5, but my 2.5 year old quad core pc isn't up to the task. My 1.5 year old imac is also suffering to the point where I would not want to deal with the slow down. So, get a machine with performance specs to run Adobe products.
Thanks for the heads up on that Stone. We were planning on going with Corel. It can get very overwhelming at times with all the different advice from people. I think it comes down to just going what works best for you.

Thanks again for the info.

So others don't run into this. You will only get usable RAM of 3.5gb with a 32 bit operating system. Getting anything more than 4 gb of ram for a computer that can't use it would be a waste.

Yeah I remember that now... My system came with 64 bit, but I installed 32 bit due it not working with Adobe or my roland plotter (dont remember which one) at the time... over a year ago.
For personal/graphics/editing Embroidery and DTG- we are running..

HP

Intel Core 2 [email protected] 2.67 gHz
6.0 GB
64 Bit
Windows Vista

DTG Printer- Rip Only

same set up but with Windows 7

using Corel x4 and x5 and Adobe on both

We just lost our Sony Vaio 32 bit because it was being overworked so we had to replace with a desktop

21.5" iMac and an older emachine to run my cutter and printer.
I'm running 2 quad core desktop PC's w/ 8 megs of ram in each with 1T hard drives in each, each system has 2 24" monitors running Windows 7 64 bit.
I've had to upgrade alot of my software after the switch from 32 bit to 64 bit, (what a pain in the a$$). My laptop is an Alienware Area 51 (4 year old running windows 7, 32 bit.
I use them for my artwork (both at the shop and at home) and to drive my equipment. I didn't get a Mac because some of the software to drive my equipment and to do graphics isn't wrote for Macs.
I do Large Format Printing, Embroidery, Screen Printing, Signs & Banners, Video, Music Recording and anything else that someone brings me to do.
I started small 7 years ago with the only computer I could afford (not a new one then but, it ran flexisign and photoshop 5) and a 24" roland vinyl cutter and 1 deskjet printer.
