What transfer material for tan shirts?

OK, so we've been working on some tan 100% cotton t-shirts and having a bit of trouble with the end product. We're using Jet Pro SS transfer paper and this job was mainly single color (black) text with a larger outline graphic. It appears as though some of the white from the transfer paper is transferring and leaving a rectangle the size of the paper on the shirts. Is there an easy way to avoid this or is that color of shirt just not going to work with this transfer paper? Thanks in advance.

Are you cutting out the design before pressing it? Light transfer paper should not transfer anything but the image, especially not white. A darker tan may show the cutout border but that should be it.
I didn't cut it out as it was mostly text with no background. Sounds like this may not be the right application of that product?
Cut out the image, whether text or image by cutting everything that's not part of the design. Leave 1/4 in. or a little more for a border, then press it. That should solve it.
I'll give that a go on the next one. Say you were trying to use the head graphic in your profile pic as a BW transfer. Would you just cut around the outside and just have to deal with getting some transfer in the "voids" of the face and neck?
If you're doing light t-shirts, the non-printed areas will not show. What will be there is the color of the shirt.
What's classified as a "light" t-shirt then? Apparently tan and gray are not:)
Depending on the color of the tan, lighter or darker, shouldn't make much of a difference as they will both work with a light paper. Also with gray; depends on the color of gray. Ash, which is a very light gray, works well but I wouldn't go much darker than that unless your design is black only.

White(obviously) and some pastel colours.
What type of transfer would you all use on a royal blue shirt
Ok I have some of those.. I haven't printed anything on them. I have a request for Tshirts to a family reunion and they want some pictures of family who have passed. You think this might work?

Pictures on a dark shirt are not fun. The 3G Opaque is real plastic feeling and heavy for large area prints. The colors and resolutions is great but thinck as a brick! JPSS does ok with pics on lite shirts but except for screen printing, DTG and maybe some laser transfers., photos are difficult to market on dark apparel.

Agree entirely, for decent repro of pictures/photos on darks I use this....WoW Professional

Expensive but the best results using printed transfers.

How is the hand? How difficult was it for you to master the mask transfer. I read horror stories about people wasting transfer papers trying figure this out. Thanks for the info. I am revisiting this WOW stuff again :)

Hand is a little heavier than light transfers bur not as heavy as most opaques for darks.

I create my mask in photoshop, just match the image and mask, a bit of care required but as long as you match the paper edges accurately all should be good.

We recently created a video on using transfers for lights on coloured garments as we get asked this question regularly. You may find it helpful - yolö love transfer - Printable Heat Transfer Paper for Light Fabric used on Colours - YouTube
I actually am scrapping using inkjet with JPSS for the same reason. I print on a lot of pink, lime, light purple, etc. shirts and always get the JPSS borders. I have tried all sorts of papers, pressures, temps, and it will always be there.

Its not enough to just trim around the edges when your graphics contain intricate pictures or big letters, then the inside of the P and D letters can't be trimmed.

I am upgrading to a laser printer so hopefully I can get better quality.
