What sells better Pictures & Words, Graphic & Words, Just Words?

We are just starting out in this industry - bet you've heard that one before. We are developing an inventory of designs for the shirts and I was wondering if there was any information - either stats or personal experience on what sells better T-Shirts with

  1. Pictures and Words
  2. A Graphic and Words
  3. Just words
And lastly, is there a color of T-Shirt that sells best? In my own research (walking malls and looking online) I have noticed mostly black or white shirts being shown and the availability to select shirt color.

Thanks,
Phil

I think that only words is selling quite good. Most of the fun t-shirts just have a few words or a sentence on them and if it's funny or good enough, you don't need graphics or a pic on the t-shirt.

Honestly, only your artwork and the appeal to your potential customers will answer your question, I've seen really crappy artwork that people buy and I scratch my head trying to see the appeal, it's a matter of choice.

As far as color....#1 white, #2 black, #3 ash gray, #4 blue, #5 red.....at least in our shop that's what sells the most with white & black being neck and neck....we do also sell a lot of safety green & orange during the summer.

Hope this helps.

I agree it is a matter of choice to the potential customer and no real way to gauge which one sells better. Your location will also play a role, as what sells more in my shop, may not be a big seller in a shop on the other side of the country. I have been printing a lot of yellow lately, then white, then navy.

brand name is very important to me when pick up the t-shirts when i buy a one. I specially like nike, also with the basketball star kobe image printed on, i prefer.

The 3 points you post is most important for most of customers when make a selection.

Why limit your self to one or the other?they both sell.I love to design, but sometimes I come up with a great one liner.I make a t-shirt mock up and put it in what I call black n white folder. When i do luanch im going to have alot of designs.some with graphics some without. The more choices you have the more likely to sell something.IMO.good luck !
