You mention DTG printers but make references to machines that user inkjet transfers. Most of us who use or have used inkjet transfers use Epson printers because many of them come with pigment ink which is good for transfers. Do not use a Claria ink which is in some Epson printers or dye ink as they wash out quickly. Remember dye ink is not to be confused with sublimation ink which is sometimes referred to as dye sublimation ink.
What printers use good inks for transfers?
So I'm getting a lot of different answers when it comes to this question. I was about to get a used HP printer online for printing on transfer paper... that is until I read the inks or toners for HP printers aren't waterproof which I was confused about because I thought the transfers had a sort of film over them once heat pressed to a shirt,I guess not?. I don't want to make a shirt only to have the transfer fade away and break after a few washes. Now I've also read a lot of people are using Epson printers for there dye inks? I guess I'm just hoping someone can explain all this to me. Why one is better then the other... what brand printers(with what ink styles) are good for heat transfers and why? Also what printers are not good and why?, any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you!

Hmm I'm not sure why it is under DTG printers as that is not what I am looking for way to much money for me! so pigment ink is what I'm looking for then? also what is the sublimation ink...that's good? and which of the two is better? Also I've watched some videos that are saying no matter what heat transfer paper or ink you use to print its always going to get messed up after a few washes? They say the only way to make a shirt that isn't going to fade quickly is to have my images screen printed which I don't want to have to do, I want to be able to just print The images at home on transfer paper. any opinions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Sublimation ink is a ink used for heat transfers but it works only on 100% white polyester.
There are better and worse transfers but non will give you very good washability. Screen printing, screen printed transfers (plastisol transfers) and DTG are the only good options for good washability.

Sublimation ink transfers will not far. Basically the process bonds the ink to the polyester fibers. Will not bond to cotton. Check out the suction section for a ton of information

Sublimation ink is a kind of ink used for heat transfers. It is suitable for materials of fabrics (PE, Nylon, fiber, etc.), acrylic, metal, wood and stone. I have bought Sublimation ink which has high density and durability, good water-resistance from sign-in-china.

Hey thank you for all the help everyone!, I will be using cotton tees so sublimation ink is out of the question.
So what I have gathered Is use an Epson printer with pigment ink. Now I am brand new to all of this, the only heat transfers I have done were with the transfer papers from walmart for fun a few years ago. But am now looking to get serious. My main question now is...
If I print out images on my computer at home from my average ( not DTG ) epson printer onto high quality self weeding transfer paper using pigment ink, Fallowed by applying the image to the shirt with a heat press machine... Will this shirt last.. as in after wearing and washing it 20 times+.. am I still going to have a nice shirt?
This is for personal wear. I understand the image color might fade to a certain extent but will it start to crack and look like ****? I don't mind it starting to look dull after owning for a long time like most shirts from the store do anyways. I just don't want to wast my time and money on transfer papers/ printer/ heat press if in the long run...months and months later Its going to be something I'm not going to want to wear.
