these are generally used by website designers etc to create a seamless background image that repeats over and over, but just looks like 1 giant image, no matter how big the resolution.
websites, backgrounds on large prints, vehicle wraps, wall wraps/murals, scrolling graphics, fabric printing ... etc. etc. etc.
Normally this is for things like patterns (chevron, clam shells, scales, diamond plate, etc) but I've also seen it for illustrated designs that need to repeat and other fun designed things ... like this Create a Trendy Seamless Type Pattern | Vectips but normally it's to save space for large printed graphics.
