What has been your best ROI?

I've been spending time looking through people's posts and threads about how to market their clothing lines so that more traffic, and in return, more sales come their way. A lot want to know about very inexpensive tactics or techniques that cost nothing at all (which is understandable for those just starting out).

However, over the years with my own line, I've realized that the old phrase "money makes money" tends to be very true. My question is what have been your all's best ROIs (return on investments) when it comes to advertising?

Facebook ads, google adwords, email marketing, seo optimization, etc. - What has made you notice the most traffic/sales increase?

We dont have a clothing line, but a retail sporting goods store, and the best marketing we have had is just word of mouth, and email list. We had a softball event and we had access to one of the email list for all of the softball teams in the area, it was our busiest days ever.

I hear facebook ads work well for the money, and google works well too.
Yes, you are right about word of mouth. It is effective to a degree, especially if you're targeting the local area. I'm looking for a slightly larger scale though, one that word of mouth alone might fall short of.
True, although we did happen to have one of our former employes go off to college in PA and got us business with his college wrestling team, which spread to a few other teams in the college, and that led over to one or two other colleges in that area as well, I guess it was just luck of the draw on those though.
Not sure, for us it has been networking groups, like BNI. Yellow pages are worthless.

Has anyone else paid for a type of advertisement and had a nice turnout from it?
I believe there is no right single answer. Different things work for different people and a lot has to do with your target market. For instance Google Ad-words may be close to impossible to get an ROI from if you are targeting t-shirt market yet for us it is very effective as we have a smaller niche market we attack.

Almost have to throw darts at the wall and start tracking what is working and what is not. It takes time and some money to really get a sense of what works for your specific needs.

For me Google Adwords and proper SEO optimization has helped in getting visibility in Google and sales on the site.
find a community that buys your products and start working with them and contributing. They will bring their business your way. Feeling like you have a "friend" that won't rip you off goes a long way.

Mark is 100% correct.

I posted something similar a few weeks ago ...

John Wanamaker, a merchant and retailing tycoon during the early 1900s, is often quoted as having said "Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted, the trouble is, I don't know which half".

Unfortunately, within many businesses and industries, this is as true today as it was 100 years ago.

The reality is, marketing and advertising involves TESTING. Some programs are a resounding success, and some are complete failures. You may have to test a number of different programs and/or advertising vehicles in order to find the one(s) that generate the best results for your business.

The bottom line is, you'll never know if it's a good idea, unless you try it. You'll also never know if it was "worth" your time and money (ROI), unless you track the results.

Good Luck.

I agree. I'd say proper SEO techniques will be your best ROI... although you need to invest a lot of time and research to see what exact keywords you should target.

Adwords worked well for me when I used my free vouchers, but if I had bought them at face value ($200) I wouldn't have gotten much return.
Awesome, thanks for all the input everyone
If you use Google Adwords (or equivalent) and add Google Analytics to your website, you will have the ability to track website traffic and see how many visitors from your PPC (Pay Per Click) ads result in sales. This can give you concrete data concerning your ROI.

It takes time and effort to develop effective ads to run. You'll need to test ads and have a good understanding of the keywords you need to target.

Compared to other ways of advertising to larger target markets, I think PPC ads and website traffic analysis are by far the most efficient.
