what cutter to buy, where to buy it from?

Hello there,
I'm seriously looking to buy a cutter. I'm confused with all the different models available in the market.
Apparently my choices for a 40" cutter are :
  • Roland GX-400 (46") : $4,995 US
  • Jaguar IV (40") : $3,995 US
  • Graphtec CE6000-120 (48″) : $3,895.00

I'm going to finance it and hopefully will get the money back in a short period. I want to use it for Tshirt transfers, car tints and vinyl signs.

Now my question is which one is more reliable and what should I take into consideration on buying a cutter? Any other expenses (except the supplies and vinyls) to be considered or the plotter itself comes with everything (I hear about Rip softwares - do I need one? and does it come with one or I have to buy it separately? How much is it?). I already have the design programs such as Illustrator, photoshot, corel draw ... do I need any special software to cut from?

also any reliable source to buy the cutter from?

I'm browsing for days now and get more confused each day.
I appreciate if you share any help or experiences you had in this regard.

Thanks
Ray

One of us is confused. When you say cutter/plotter I think of print/cut and your prices don't support that.

The models you list are all good. Pick one and run with it.
Thanks for the reply. You're right, by plotter I meant cutter. I'm old school ;)

any info on the rip software? Is it really required for cutters?

Thanks
Ray
We have both a graphtec and a Roland and both came with software that works with AI and Corel. Ask your vendor. We used ciber supply and imprintables

may I ask what Graphtec are you using? the salesperson is trying to sell me the more expensive one but I'm not sure if that's the one I need for the start up.

  • FC8600-130 (54″) $6995
  • CE6000-120 (48″) $3,895.00

He's telling me FC8600 is the one I should go with for sign business.

Thanks a bunch :)
I also have a local dealer with "GCC Jaguar IV" in the same price range. I like the fact that this is a local dealer, but I don't hear a lot about the Jaguar cutters.

We have the CE5000-60. Give Ciber Supply a call, they were great to work with.

CS Sign Supply - Sign making supplies, equipment and software for all levels of business
We have a Roalnd GX24 - Simple user interface/software - 8 years and running strong. Highly recommend the support with this through Imprintables Warehouse. We get our media there too.
We find that the Roland GX-24 and the Graphtec CE-6000 are both great cutters..

For a 40 inch I'd recommend the GX-400.
