I want to be able to "shade" an area. I don't know if you call it shading, but I want to have a bunch of dots in an area instead of the whole area full. I think this would be good for one color designs, may make it look like there is another color. I want the dots to have the same pattern all over, NOT A GRADIENT! Can anybody help me?

this is called "Halftone"

I'm not familiar on how to do this with Illustrator, but when we needed to do it in photoshop, a quick Google search worked wonders!

Hi!
Ok, if you use illustrator, we assume that you will use spot colors. Suppose you are using a black spot color and the shade area as grey. Then you can use the same spot color black and tint that black color to grey. When you send to printer, it will do the rest for you. Please check upload picture.

Please use the slider bar in the color pallete to lower down the tint. Please see image I posted. Grey is based on the same color of black.

How do you get an even cover? It seems to only make the dots on the outer edges of the design.

Make sure the object is a shade of black with NO outline... that's all I did

To create a tint or shade, go to:
"Window" (menu) then Select "Color"

Slide the black slider down to whatever percentage you want

The one above was 30% of Black

if you work with black in CMYK all you do is select the part of the design that you want to shade or halftone and make it a percentage of the black. then when you print it out you need to change the frequency in your separations, box in your printer menu
