Vinyl peeling off when washed

2013 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Sunjoa
I mostly do one colour vinyl heat transferred images and usually have no problem.

A friend of mine has asked me to do a run of multicoloured prints on soft shell jackets, unfortunately when I have done layered printing before I have had complaints that the vinyl has peeled off the base layer of vinyl very quickly in the wash, I assume I am doing something wrong here, can anyone advise me on how to stop this?

Any help you can give will be very much appreciated as I don't want to disappoint my friend.

Thanks

Not enough heat? Not enough time?

Post some pictures
The other question is..... Why washing a softshell jacket
Some vinyl isn't suitable for layering, and perhaps you aren't using vinyl specifically for nylon/polyester application?

It may also be your pressure/heat isn't set correctly. I would refer to your suppliers website and make sure you check the above first, and if you don't have the right vinyl order some samples in and test it out before you take the job on.

Good luck!
Perhaps I'm not using the correct material, perhaps I'll look into that.

It's not so much the soft shells that's the issue but there are polo shirts I'll also be doing and they will be washed.

So you guys don't generally have any issue with multi layered prints coming off in the wash? If that's the case it's definitely something I'm doing wrong.
We've done several dozens of multi-layered vinyl shirts and only had a problem with one, single shirt. The most likely cause I would think would be using a vinyl that is not meant to be layered on. Check your vendor's website and see if the specifications state anything with regards to layering. Have you tried reversing the order of the layers, putting the first layer on last and the last layer on first. Just a thought. Other than that, check to be sure the vinyl you are using is acceptable for use on that garment. Some vinyl has very limited uses, others do not. Lastly, I agree with the others about time, temperature, and pressure. Hope this helps.

What kind of material do you use? Manufacturer?

For vinyl we use Stahl's. The material would be Premium Plus, Metallic, and Glitter Flake mostly. It depends on the design.
Hope this helps,

This is an example of Metallic on a long-sleeved T-Shirt. It's for my daughter, she uses it frequently and washes it after every use. The design is not layered, it is a single layer throughout. Be sure to use a pad to get a smooth surface on which to press.

Hope this helps,
