vinyl and screen print on same shirt

I have a bunch of shirt to do for a cheer competition the first week of November. I'm doing a common design on all shirts, however, the design on back will include a design with a girls name. Because of this, I was going to do the back in gold vinyl. To keep the front consistent with the back, would you also do the front in vinyl, rather than custom transfers or screen print. The transfers would be cheaper and easier since I may have 75 to 100 shirts but the athletic gold colors on the maroon shirts may not match up. I also have to be done with front and back by November 4th so time may be an issue.
Anyway, just seeing what others would do.

can you screenprint the back design and just do the actual name in vinyl?
I would either do all designs in plastisol, and the names in vinyl OR, use a transfer vendor (such as TransferExpress.com) who will do name drops on the back design, and do everything in plastisol.

The name is nested inside the design so I'd be fooling around with precise registration and then possibly two different colors and textures on the same design. I thought about it but I'm not sure how professional it would look.

Well there's 110 different girls so I'm not sure name drops would be feasible. I may not get orders for all the girls but even if half the parents order shirts with the girls names on them that would be a lot of work.
Ah yes, I see your dilemma much clearer now.

I would think that combining the 2 methods would work though. Registration might not be as challenging as it seems now. You've probably developed a good eye for one, and for another, since each name is different, 1/8 of an inch is not going to be noticable.
That's a tough call. If Transfer Express can do it, that might be the best option. How intricate is your back design? Front?

We've done orders of over 1000 shirts with vinyl, but they were crazy easy to weed.

We've also quoted jobs that required 45 minutes of weeding for each shirt, and as you might expect, the price was a little high for them. The design for that job will need to be changed to allow for minimum thicknesses for plastisol, which is the option we're looking at now, but they're not customized between individual shirts.

I don't see too much of a problem with vinyl on the back and screen print on the front, as long as they are somewhat similar.
Here's the front and back design. The concern i have is getting the ink to match the vinyl from front to back. If I do custom transfer on the back and do vinyl for the name, I'm concerned about having the name color not match the rest of the design. As you can see, it wouldn't be much to weed. Probably a couple minutes each side.

Here's an idea...

What if you deliberately made the individual names a different color? Would that be possible?

How about glitter gold?

Just a thought.

That's an idea. I'd have to go back to the board and get that approved. I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for the idea. Wish I had thought of it.
IMHO, if you can't get the buyers to go for a different look/color/glitter/maybe copper I wouldn't chance a slight difference in the shade of yellow/gold between the screen print and the names. Try taking a sample of your vinyl to the printer and tell them they can have the job IF they can make a perfect match and then be sure(or make sure first) that you have enough of that particular vinyl on hand or get enough to be sure you don't need to order more and find that the new vinyl doesn't get a slight variance in color between the batch you have and any new batch the might have at the time you actually are ready for it. Does my rambling get you confused? Sorry. The thing is you want a satisfied customer. Good luck.
Looking at the color swatches for athletic gold and glitter gold, the glitter might be a little dark, but my daughter, one of the cheerleaders, likes it.
Now I guess I should test to see if I can press the vinyl on a shirt with plastisol ink already on. I'm not sure if the clear acetate the vinly is on would mess up the other printing.

You would most likely want to trim the names pretty close so that they don't leave lines in your plastisol.
Ok, I'm looking through more swatches and saw the electric yellow. You can't see in this pic, but This may look good with the athletic gold color.
Since I'll be doing lot's of other shirts using athletic, I ordered 50 yards today.
Ok, I was half asleep when I sent the last post and now I notice my pic didn't come through. Hmmm.
Depending on when the parents turn in their order forms, I may be leaning towards vinyl. Whether I do screen printing on part, or send away for custom transfers, that takes extra time I may not have. Unless I make the prints small for the mens shirts to equal the size for the womens shirts, I would need to have two sizes. I usually like 12" for regular t-shirts but the fitted women's shirts can't fit that size. We'll see. Somehow it all comes together in the end.
