Re: very important question

On a personal note, i`ve seen it a few times, and that is i would be very carefull about printing others disigns, even geting the ok from them.
Reason i say this, is a lot of the time, its permission by way of mouth, and say you sell 10.000 tops with this pwersons prints on, he could then think he is missing out and then play the rouge and say he gave you permission for a few, not 1,000`s
I`ve seen this at first hand with a friend, he had a family friend say ok and made a lot with advertising on taxies and such, but then wanted half the money he earned from it, less to say it went to court and he had to pay some money.
Get it in way of writing if possabl, and make sure the designs are his or hers ?
Just remember that a persons best friend is the colour of money ;):)

Ownership, or usage, of intellectual property can only be transferred in writing. I would definitely make sure you have something in writing that says you can sell their design, and is clear about who gets what percentage of the money. Without it, you wouldn't have a leg to stand on if it went to court.

This is my understanding, not legal advice. I would consult an IP attorney if you have the money.

One thing you might want to think about is buying the rights to unlimited use but not ownership for the sum of $1.00 .Not a lawyer( but I slept at a holiday inn one time) but to my understanding from real estate dealings, that is a valid and unbreakable contract. Just tell them it is something that your attorney told you to do when you started your business cause you never know what some distant relative might come up with should anything happen to your friend. ( just assuming they are friends)Good luck.

Get it in writing. Also you shouldn't be afraid of getting other people to design for you. I think the story about having to pay a designer extra money in court is an isolated incident. I've heard way more horror stories about bad clients not paying their designers.
