Using DTG to print on Film Positive Transparency?

Has anyone ever tried printing onto a Film Positive using their DTG? I don't have a wide format printer and was thinking this could be an option for printing large format dark inks for Screen Print films.

Well I've printed nozzle checks on transparency film, if you leave it to dry then generally I've found the ink doesn't come off unless you use some kind of cleaner. So you might be ok, best thing to do is just print an A4 and then test it out.

It will not work with the waterbased inks used for direct to garment printing.

Textile inks will not work on transparency films for 2 main reasons.

1. Maybe on a nozzle check the ink "dries", but it will never "cure" until heat is applied.

2. Because of the higher resolutions used for DTG printing, as soon as you start printing the ink would drip from the page. Even on the lowest settings the inks will not fix to the surface, and would drip from the sheet.
Depends on the RIP and media, I certainly had a customer who tested direct to screen using the Dupont black and said it did work.
As its a dye based black ink I dont see why it shouldnt work onto a waterproof Film, but I dont know what density you would get and the RIP would have to give you halftone options and a way of controlling the ink.

If you are using a Cadlink product its pretty streight forward to try.

Note: Because of the head height you would probably have to run it in Uni directional mode as Bi directional will make a mess of the halftones due to Bi dir alignment.

But you can pick up an Epson 1100 for $150 that would do this properly, not sure why you would want to do this with a DTG machine.

Best regards
