It depends on what inks you use, and the opacity. If you're doing fluorescent inks that don't have much opacity, they'll disappear into the garment without an underbase. On the other hand, if you're using a really thick red or something, then you may be able to print directly and be fine. Try it on a pellon and see how it looks.

Also, check out Excalibur inks (Screen Printing Supplies and Equipment is where I get mine). They've got some cool high opacity inks that shouldn't need an underbase. Depending on the color, it may be a little more expensive than what you're paying now, but it's totally worth it for the quality of life factor.
