Hi All

Just a quick one... do I need a license to print band tshirts. ie GnR Apetite for Destruction, Alice Cooper, Motley Crue etc?

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, you need a license. The band owns their name, logo, songs, album artwork, etc as intellectual property. Using it without license or permission would be infringement and you could be sued.

Any ideas how I would go about getting a license such as this. Would I need to contact the band etc?

How do these online shop go on that sell such tshirts? Do they have licenses for each band?

Yes, you would need to contact the band directly and ask about licensing opportunities.

I'm sure some of what you see online is unlicensed. But a lot of it is licensed. They either have negotiated a deal with the bands or they have purchased the merchandise through a licensed distributor. These distributors buy up a lot of unsold stock after the band's tour and then resells them to retail stores.
