OK, so this isn't the exact picture but this is basically what I'm trying to do: I have a butterfly image and I want to create a "flying trail" behind the butterfly with words that start at the top and work their way down. Unlike this image, I don't want there to be "curls" in the trail, but more of a rounded zig-zag pattern, does that make sense? I created a path in PS but have no clue how to write words on it. I've looked up tutorials but they're all different and I guess I haven't found any that address this specifically. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You have to have a vectored path to get text to adhere to it. It can't be anything rasterized. My advice is to use the pen tool to draw your line, because if you make a work path from a rasterized line, even at the lowest tolerance setting possible (.5) you'll still get the rigidness from the aliasing which will make your letters uneven.

If you're looking to have text adhere to a perfect shape, simply draw the shape using the appropriate shape tool with the "Paths" option selected instead of shape layers.
