How do you know when your trademark is approved, or active or whatever? I filed to trademark last week and it's already in the TESS system as active.

Your application is active. You should have a serial number assigned to the application so you can view it as necessary. It is not officially approved until you get a registration number. It should take 13-18 months for the entire process to run its course.
