Tone on tone dark colors

I am trying to accomplish grey on grey or dark on dark shirts/hoodies. I would be new to getting into this, so I have no real basis of understanding the business as a whole outside of what I have researched and read in this forum.

Is it possible to do something like this with transfers:

I understand that I could not use normal dark transfer paper because it would have a white background so the colors stuck out, however could I use regular opaque or transparent paper since the colors do not have to be vivid or jump off the material?

If not, am I stuck at looking into screen printing?
