I'd agree most any good digital camera should do the job, just make sure the image is a higher resolution then what you need so you can crop the image and not loose any quality if you have to resize it.

I had a client that owned a kayak business (took people on trips) and did the very thing your talking about, he used a $135 small 6mp camera (today you can buy a 12mp camera for about $149) that he could stow in a water tight container...said he sold a ton of mugs.

Now that's an idea. Not that I'd go out and buy a kayak business, but be there when they take off and get their photos at that time. By the time they get back, you could have their mugs done. Hmmm.
Maybe next year. It's getting a bit late this year for kayaking in Minnesota.
