do any of you take in outside work with your heat press machines, where you heat press someone elses shirts and charge them for it. How did you advertise and how much did you charge them per shirt?

Definitely. The heat press is there, why not use it for everything you can?

I would price like this: Charge them full price for the transfers, and charge them 60% of your retail price on the shirts.

That's what I'd do, but I'm sure others will have their own ways.

for sure put your equipment to use $.

it's a good idea to see the garments you will be working with...since cheap shirts/seconds etc. maybe hard to work with and this will take you more time to do the job. On the other hand, a lot of Brands may want printing ONLY since they manufacture their own garments etc....or may even send you the garment part (sleeve) only to print before it is stitched together.

But do charge... .50-1.00/ea. for 50 plus qty. it is a trade you know.... and you do run the risk of screw-ups, cheap garment dyes (woops ! where did that stain come from ?) LOL ....

As for advert. " bring your own shirts " ...du-no.

Where would you advertise for iron-on printing only ?

You can certainly do this, but there are some things to consider. If someone hands you 24 shirts and they want 24 shirts returned with a design on them, that could be trouble. You need to tell them that you will need some extra shirts in order to make sure that you can fulfill an order of 24. If someone ordered 24 shirts from you they would get 24 shirts, but you might have used 26 shirts to create the order. Mistakes can happen, and you do not want to have a "short" order because they did not supply you with enough blanks.

If they are supplying the transfers also, do a test before you accept the job. Make sure you can use the transfers. Many times, using a customers shirts and transfers can be more work for you than actually doing the whole process yourself, so don't be afraid to charge accordingly.

As far as advertising, you could start by offering your transfer services as a subcontractor to others that already do it. Get a few business cards printed up and give them out. Sometimes they may need an extra hand and heat press to fulfill larger orders. Screen printers may use your services for very small orders that they do not want to deal with, but could sub the work to you and still make a buck or two. You can also offer to personalize club and group shirts that may have been screen printed in larger quantity by adding their names to each shirt.
