Tablet for graphic design?

I'm in the market for a new laptop. The idea just dawned on me that maybe I'd like to get a tablet (the laptops with a screen the rotates and folds closed like a drawing tablet) for doing freehand artwork on my computer. Though I have no experience with them and I don't know if the quality of the touch screen will be worth it for drawing.

Any experiences?

Personal opinion only having never used a tablet PC, I would think they would not be geared towards drawing that well, probably would be better off with a Wacom tablet, we have two and love them.

Wacom Products

Hope this helps.

What tablet do you have...I have been looking at the Wacom Intuos.
I agree with IYFGraphics, I love my Wacom tablet! I have not used the tablet PC's but would be concerned on their longevity and how much it would cost to get it fixed if something happened. But adding a tablet to a laptop means you care carrying one more thing around.

I do have an older one Intous 2 12 x12 on a desktop CPU.

i was wanting to get a tablet for my home office for awhile. when the ipad came out i thought that could be perfect but it turns out the touch area is too large for fine detail (the area is about the size of the tip of your pinky finger). I haven't tried a tablet PC but i know a forum member had reviewed one (he wanted the same thing as you) and i think he said it was not usable.

I ended up getting a Wacom, the intuos4 wireless and couldn't be happier with it.

My wife (artist/designer) has a Intuos 3 (I belive), and I have the Bamboo Fun (her hand me down), both are great tablets.

Hope this helps.
IYFGraphics, I have been thinking about getting a Bamboo for my laptop. Have you had any issues with the one you have?

What about screen size of the tablets does that play a big roll?

Never....not one problem at all, the only reason my wife upgraded is because of the difference in the work area.

Hope this helps.
I have a 12 x 12 on my desktop CPU, if I zoom in while in CorelDRAW I still have the full use of the tablet across the screen. The only thing I have to keep reminding myself of is not to zoom in if I am doing my initial trace from the tablet (sketch taped to the tablet). If I do things will be in to different sizes. If you are using more then on monitor the tablet is split between the two of them so you only have half the working area.
The smaller tablets will still work the full size of your screen/monitor; you just don’t have to move as far. Again if you zoom in the tablet will always give you access to the entire screen.

Thanks Jon, I take my laptop with me when I go out of town and miss my tablet. Maybe I will ask for one for Christmas! LOL

i had wondered the same thing and i ended up getting the medium size.
i read some reviews and allot of the artists saying to get the biggest size were doing work along the lines of mat painting. The large size gives you more hand control and fluidity, this makes a difference if you're digitally painting/sketching, it's a more natural flow (like working on a large canvas). For illustration, design and color separations, the medium size is perfect for me.

Yeah it does in a way I work on a 23" monitor and the Bamboo Fun's small work area makes it kind of a challenge, but it could be just me because my wife doesn't seem to have the problem working at my PC, so I'd say it's fine once you get use to your hand movements correlating with the screen.

She just went to the bigger tablet because a lot of the work she does has fine detail and the bigger the tablet the easier that would be IMHO.

Hope this helps.

I researched those touch screen laptops and desktops a few months ago, for the same reason. I thought it would be great for drawing and painting in Photoshop. I discovered that none of them are pressure sensitive. This means that no matter how light or hard you press on the screen, it won't make a difference in your line darkness or thickness, which is important when drawing on the computer. Definitely would recommend Wacom's products. Wish I had enough $ to spend on a cintiq, just have a normal 6 x 8 right now. It does me pretty good though, you can check out one of my latest Photoshop t-shirt designs here.

Intuos make a great tablet. A little pricey, but worth the cost if you draw.

Funny you should say draw, I agree with you 100% but my wife has taken to using hers for everything just like using a mouse....:)

my creative director does the same. Me personally, I use the new track pad from apple.
Funny... call me an idiot, but I almost forgot that I had a Bamboo sitting on a shelf collecting dust. My uncle works for Wacom and gave it to me, but at the time I didn't really know why I'd need it.
