Quantify "large" gap. It probably has to do with head (pass) width. The head is around 3.8" wide. Example: if you print a single color image that is 3.9" tall the print head will have to make two passes in order to get the full 3.9" image thus leaving 3.7" of unprinted area in the second pass. This could be where you are getting a gap. Learn to stack your images so you get the most out of a single pass.
Another thing is that at the beginning of every print you are going to have about 6" of unused material. This is due to the way the printer and cutter are teamed together. At the very front you have pinch roller followed by the cutter and then the thermal print head- it takes about 6" thus the unused material.
Summa tech support is awesome.
Hope this helps.
