I am just starting my business, and my objection to sublimation is that I have to use polyester instead of cotton. Does anyone have any suggestions on what would be the best quality transfer, and standard ink, if I don't want to use sub ink. I've read that there's a coating that can be used on cotton so the sub inks will penetrate. Does anyone know anything about that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have been doing sublimation for over 9 years...and there is NO DIY coating that is commercially viable. It just does not work with consistent results...You just end up wasting expensive sublimation ink...so either accept that you need polyester for sublimation or do cotton with something like JPSS...but with any other transfer you are doing just that...transfer on TOP of material and not becoming a part of the fabric like sublimation

Thanks, I really appreciate your answering. I want to make a quality product, but don't feel I can do it with polyester. I'll check out the JPSS.

Hi Marcia and :welcome:

You can have very high-end quality product using sublimation on polyester t-shirts. Polyester has evolved dramatically over past few years :) There are performance fabrics that are actually more comfortable and more hygenic than cotton.

Unfortunately, breaking negative stereotypes is never easy. Plus the end product - sublimated performance shirt that looks and feels like cotton - demands a higher price.

With the new performance wear apparel out there now, sublimation looks better than inkjet transfers. The only drawback is it's limited to light colors. If you want to use cotton, take a look at Chromablast. But that too is limited to lights.

Thanks so much. I had never heard of Chromablast, but after doing some research, it looks like it might be the perfect solution. I really appreciate your taking the time to answer.
