I'm interested in starting a t shirt business, but I want to test the waters so to speak.

Find someone your area who is doing what you think you want to do, ask if they'll give you a personal demo on how it works if you pay for materials. Try to find someone who you wouldn't be directly competing with when you're up & going.
You can order transfers & such online, but it won't do you much good if you don't have equipment. You may also be able get samples of shirts printed with transfers... but that won't tell you anything about the process. Much better to get a hands-on look at what you're considering.
