Hello!!

I teach high school kids with multiple disabilities. I am looking to teach the kids how to operate equipment for a business and I am also looking to keep the program running using money from printing for the school stores in the district. Can you recommend what printer and press I should get? What other materials should I get?

I saw your post and felt I might be able to give you some help. First off, I spent 35 years working with adults with disabilities in a work setting. I had considered apparel decorating as a tool to provide employment opportunities as well as allowing the individuals to have employment with pay. We served the DD population.

After research I did not see that this was the best option in our case. However, do not let me discourage you. I commend you on your willingness to help your students. Since I do not know what population you are teaching, this may be a great opportunity.

What I would suggest is that you do as much research on the subject of apparel decorating. I would suggest that you start by going to one or more apparel shows. You will get a chance to visit a lot of vendors, attend seminars etc. You will see a full range of equipment and get one on one time with equipment vendors, ink suppliers etc. You might start by going to the left had side of the forums home page and go to Preferred Vendors Directory. You will find a listing for the ISS Tradeshows they sponsor. Click on it and it will take you to a page with a listing of Trade Shows. Since I don't know where you are located just find one that is close and register to attend. Another one is the NBM Show ( National Business Media, Inc.) If you Google it you will find there home page and it should list the next trade shows. You can subscribe to there various publications on apparel decorating. Since I don't know your background in apparel decorating or you teaching background I offer these as a starting point for your research. If you do register for a show and you do it early you can just elect to visit the exhibit hall for free. The classes are usually at a cost but you don't have to sign up for any. When you visit the exhibit hall you will go away with a lot of literature .

Again, I wish you the best in your efforts and if I can be of additional help please let me know.

THANKS!

I will help you get started. I will print your transfers for free for an agreed amount of time. This way you do not need to waste your start up money on a printer which is the hard part. Get a good heat press . Maybe someone can donate one to you off this forum.

Thank you both so much for the info! My students will eventually be assisted through DDD but my hope is that some will be able to attain employment. I was hoping that starting this business would assist me with providing job skills and with earning money for the program. We take the students out into the community on a weekly basis to practice life skills, and the cost really adds up. We are in charge of the school store at the high school, and I currently order garments and have things printed through various websites.

I don't even know where to start.. what is considered a good heat press? What printer should I be saving up for? Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
