Stahls Hotronix Maxx 15x15 temperature issue.

Hey everyone I have a questions about the temperature setting on the maxx press. i bought it used for $400 and it has a build date of 04/11.

It seems to heat up 20 degrees hotter than what the lcd says its at. So if i set it to 320 degrees it will heat up and the lcd will read 320 but then a temp gun will show the heating element is at 340. It is constant all the way through the temp range its just always higher than the screen says by 20 degrees. For me its not a probe

I was curious if this is how it should work to help with cooling down to much on a cold garment or if its a faulty temp sensing unit or something.

Also while i'm not worried about fixing it because i know the problem is there, and i'm the only one that uses it right now. But i would like to know if it is fixable so if anyone else used it they wouldn't be over heating things because they weren't aware of the issue.

thanks guys.

P.S. kind of a side question. Does the warranty on the heating element transfer to me being the second owner who bought used??

Jeron. Your temperature gun may be inaccurate. That is not unusual. I believe that the warranty is not valid on second ownership. You could verify that by contacting Hotronix. 800-727-8520
That could be, I did compare the temp gun output with a friend's when I first bought it. They were different brands but read about 5 degrees different from each other. I have some temp strips I use with my screen printing conveyor drier that I'll press and see what they say. I would think those are accurate.

If my temp gun is right and it's overheating can it be fixed?

I'll call about the warranty

Thanks

Fixing? That would be a question for Hotronix.
Ok everyone i figured i would post here just in case anyone else has this issue.

After talking with Stahls, in their older presses there is a manual LCD temp dial inside the housing for adjusting the temp reading. You simply take the back cover off. In the top right (looking from the back of the control board) there should be a blue box with white dot on it. Next to that should be a dial, or another blue box with a little screw on top. That dial or screw on top of the blue box will adjust the reading on the LCD screen for the temp.

To adjust it you take the cover off.
Turn on the machine and set it to a temperature.
after it has reached temperature check the actual element temperature with something.
Then adjust the screw to change the LCD reading to match the actual element temperature.

Here are some pics from when i just did it...

Stahls says that with the older models having the manual adjustment, basic movement of the machine can cause the setting to vibrate and change over time. He suggested that i check the reading about every 2 months to make sure it hasn't changed.

The newer presses have the setting integrated into the motherboard so there are no psychical adjustment that can vibrate out of adjustment.

Glad to hear that you found the remedy.

Don't put your faith in the infrared temperature gun when checking the platen temperature. The reflectivity factor of different platens affects the temperature readings.

For best accuracy, I suggest heat strips (not sure if Stahl's still sells these) or a probe. A cheaper way, just to get a ball park reading, is to press a black shirt for about 15 seconds, open the press, then *quickly* take a reading off one spot on the shirt.

Two of my older presses use dial thermometers, which are pretty accurate, but my temp gun gives readings that are 20 degrees or so different. So don't change your calibration using your heat gun as a standard.
That is what Stahls said also. I am going to use the strips to calibrate it..

Also as a side note from my original post. Stahls said the lifetime warranty on the heating element does transfer to a second user. It is covered for the life of the press. The other warranties however do not transfer to a second person.
