Hey guys,

So I am currently starting my own clothing company and have been taking in a lot of information over the last few weeks, but I have now reached a point where I am stumped. I am trying to figure out the necessary steps that are taken when importing from overseas. I am running the business in Canada and plan on having my clothes imported from China. I have all my designs, my business number, my gst number, and my resellers license for doing all my local business. So what I am asking is what exactly do I need to begin importing.

Duty on most clothing is 18%....

Are you looking to import containers of stuff or just packages that can be shipped by UPS / FedEx?

Yes and this is where my confusion started

If you are only bringing in packages you do not need to do much on this end.....The shipper will use Fedex, DHL, UPS, etc. and they will act as their own broker to clear the package and collect duties and taxes due....Make sure your math works because I have not seen much savings, if any in small shipments of textiles....

I've already calculated my costs associated with it. The savings weren't much but when you are starting off every dollar counts. Thank you so much for the information

When importing textiles, make sure you have a CA# and proper materials and country of origin tags....Also, consider the brokerage charges which are in addition to duties and taxes.....Good luck...
