I've noticed a lot of apparel companies using solo t-shirt shots on their shopping pages online. How do they do this? Do they take photos on a plain white background? I have seen where some people have taken pictures of their shirts on a sidewalk are on some hardwood surface. What are the options for taking solo shots of t-shirts? Could somebody please provide some insight?

Here is an example of what I am talking about:

I would greatly appreciate some advice. Thanks!

Those are definitly templates with somebody just slapping the image on top. You can tell because the designs are perfectly flat but the shirt is wrinkled. A bit of a hack job.

I personally would never buy from a company with all templated images. One, they may (probably) not have the shirts in stock and are waiting for orders to order them, and two, when they do order them, they may not come out like the picture. A lot of people that don't know how to print, design shirts with a ton of colors or a hard to print location or size, and then they are shocked to see the price when they try to order 10 of them to fill their orders.

It easy to take real pictures like that. Lay the shirt on any solid background (preferably different than the shirt) and take some pictures. Play around with some different wrinkles and stuff. Photoshop, Photoshop Elements (less than $100), and a ton of other photo editing softwares have a "magic wand" type tool. You adjust it resolution, and you select an area with the color you want to remove. It should select all of that color, and you just hit delete.

Easy to do, and looks way better than mockups, and it will give your customers more confidence that you actually have the product you are selling.

Good luck!

You can download Gimp.org or Inkscape.org for free open source software.

Many people use templates there's nothing wrong with it. If you don't buy from them they might not buy from you either.

Many customers want mockups and sometimes you need a template for something right away. Can't always have a model standing around unless it's your child or spouse.
