Should I join ASI???

Hey!! I was contacted by an ASI rep last week and we had 2 nice conversations and he wants me to sign up and be a member.....At almost $200 a month I was wondering if others see the value in their service. They seem to have a good amount of sourcing for promotional products and such but I was wondering if their is an added value that I am not seeing that other companies see in ASI.....My drawback is that I am not really into promo items that much......Normally our base nitch is screen printing and doing on-site plastisol transfer printing at events....I just wanted to see if some ASI users could chime in and tell me what value you your business gets in a membership....I value that more than an ASI salesman's opinion!!! Thanks

We just joined ASI and do far we are pleased. We have 6 18 head presses and 4 manuals and are running 40 + hrs a week just off ASI alone hopefully it stays this way...
In many ways the industry is quite closed and sometimes finding alternative suppliers can be next to impossible. I guess this is where an industry organisation like ASI (or APPA in Australia) adds value. as you are 'in the club' and get reach into contacts and companies you otherwise wouldn't have.

Really depends what segment of the market you want to work with. From my experience the people who pay for it are happy and the people who haven't paid to join say they are find without it. So flip a coin :)

Matthew,

Can you please clarify what you meant by this?

Are you saying that you joined ASI recently and are now doing "wholesale screen printing" for other ASI Promo Distributors? Or did you join ASI so that you could offer promo items to your existing customers (as part of you existing screen printing business)? Just curious how your new ASI membership is keeping you busy 40+ hours a week. What were you printing before you joined ASI?

Thanks.

YES!! Please clarify this....Obviously you had to be doing a good deal before ASI to have 6 - 18 head autos and 4 manuals running......Very interested to hear your experience.....Thanks
PPAI gives the same benefits and suppliers as ASI but at a lower cost. Both organizations are useful if you are doing promotional products full time. If your focus is screenprinting and you already have a few apparel suppliers then it may not be of much help and may take some focus off your main business.
I believe the person above is a supplier NOT a distributor but I could be wrong
I joined ASI last fall as a distributor. I'm happy so far. I have access to thousands of products now that I couldn't offer to customers. I think they said they have over 3,500 suppliers who produce and print over 700,000 different products. I can't fit that kind of an inventory in my basement screen printing room! And I can let someone else do the work.
I have been an ASI member for a year now. For promotional items it is a great resource and you can buy from lots of distributors that are ASI members without the hassle of setting up individual accts. and you can search and buy from their database of wholesalers. It does add some validity to your business to suppliers and manufacturers. As far as apparel goes I don't see a great advantage and in some cases your price is better with garment wholesalers if you have an individual acct. They do have some good educational opportunities and their ASI shows are awesome. As far as my customers go they don't have a clue what ASI is and it is of no value in picking up new customers.
