separating a color photo

I need to separate a color photo in photoshop for spot color screen printing. Does anyone know the steps to splitting channels or whatever needs done. I've done it before but can't remember how!

This is one of the ways to separate colors.. I'd say use illustrator from the jump if you could and avoid this all together.
