We have a good opportunity to sell t-shirts to the PGA Tour and need some help/ideas/comments, etc. We have already submitted our design and got a call back. Any suggestions on how we should proceed would be appreciated as we are a new company and want to get "approved". Below is the info they are looking for from us.

"In order to move forward, we will need additional information from you on your company profile, as well as what you are looking to license (just t-shirts or other items)? We also like to know where you are wanting to sell the product, such as tournament, department stores, etc. I will review the information and speak to the TOUR. If we did approve your company to move forward with an agreement, we would propose terms to you, including applicable royalty rates, minimum guarantee, approved distribution, etc."

Hey pgashirtguy, welcome to the forums!

Based on the info you posted it really seems as if your opportunity is not to sell t-shirts to the PGA Tour, but to get licensed by the PGA Tour.

The difference is that with a license it will still be your responsibility to sell and distribute the product. If you were simply selling to the Tour, they would be responsible to sell the product.

I'm not as familiar with the PGA as other leagues (MLB, NBA, etc), but licensors generally want to make sure their licensees are prepared to manufacture and distribute product to the market at a volume where they can make money. So that's why they are asking you those questions.

"In order to move forward, we will need additional information from you on your company profile
They are looking for detailed info about your company. Basically, you need to put together a resume for your company and try to sell them on why you deserve to be officially licensed by the PGA.

Check out some samples of company profiles, here are two that I found: How to Develop an Effective Company Profile and Sample Company Profile - LexisNexis.

as well as what you are looking to license (just t-shirts or other items)?
Licenses are based on the merchandise item. I'm sure the PGA licenses companies to manufacture everything from shot glasses to umbrellas. Even within the clothing category, there are t-shirts, hoodies, jackets, polos, pants, socks, etc. So they want to know exactly what types of items you want a license to produce and distribute.

We also like to know where you are wanting to sell the product, such as tournament, department stores, etc.
Here they want to know your distribution. Do you sell at tournaments, to retailers or through a website?

They probably also want to know your level of distribution. If you sell to retailers, describe the distribution tier, such as department stores, sporting goods stores, pro shops, discount stores, etc.

I will review the information and speak to the TOUR. If we did approve your company to move forward with an agreement, we would propose terms to you, including applicable royalty rates, minimum guarantee, approved distribution, etc."
This is where things will get very detailed. Their terms will probably include yearly fees, royalty percentage, length of the agreement and exactly what you are licensed to sell and where you are allowed to sell it.

I hope this helps and I wish you luck with this opportunity. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.
