I start with a psd file with a transparent background. After Mode> Grayscale, Mode >Bitmap, Halftone, etc, the process automatically adds a white background to the image. If the image weren’t halftoned I could just use the Magic Wand tool and cut out the image, but the dots make this impossible.
So, is there a way to create a halftone in Photoshop with it preserving the transparent background or an easy way to remove the white background once it’s been added?

The dots aren't making it impossible, the bitmap format is what's making it impossible. You can't use the Magic Wand in a bitmap document. Go back to grayscale and you can use the Magic wand and you'll still have your halftones and you can select the background and delete it. You may need to make a new layer of your art, I can't remember.

I changed to Grayscale, but no matter what tolerance I use with the Magic Wand tool, I can't get it to outline a halftoned image properly so I can invert and cut it out. Not sure what to try next?
