I will be selling shirts soon, online, and my business is based in NC. NC has complicated Sales Tax: it changes per the county you live in. Does anyone know if I have to add sales tax to EVERYONE in NC that buys from me or, only the people that live in the county where my business is? If I have to add it to every NC resident that buys from me, it's complicated because there are about 12 different counties in NC that have a different tax rate. And, if you had to do this, how did you set it up in your checkout? THANKS SO MUCH!!

Yes you have to collect sales tax from everyone in NC. It is a State Tax not a county tax. The tax that you should charge everyone is based on where your office/shop is located not where they are buying from. For example....If you drive into one of those counties with a different tax and buy something you will pay the tax for that county not tax based on where you live.

Now the best thing you can do to ensure you are collecting taxes in the proper way is pick up the phone and call the Department of Revenue in NC. Do not rely on a public forum. Call them they will be able to answer any question you may have.

NC sales tax is stupidly complicated, there is state sales tax, county sales tax and there are rebates and increases at the same time that offset one another so you can get a .25% increase and a .25% decrease at the same time in one county but in another it might be .25% and .50% or vice versa. Plus some counties have additional taxes. I've never seen anything like it. And, when I go to pay my taxes the website it usually down. I get emails from the state almost monthly about changes related to taxation but I ignore them unless the actual rate changes.

The county tax rate is 2.00% or 2.25% +- any increases, rebates, or additional taxes. The state tax is 5.75%. Product is charged but not service, but what is service is inconsistent so I charge everyone 7.75% because that is the total in my county.
