For removing background around a model, is there a particular plugin that works better than the built-in tools in photoshop?

It depends what's in the background. I use Corel, but the techniques are similar. Sometimes if the background is busy the cleanest way to do it is to do a vector mask and clip it. I did this video a few months ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmanyu3tbeI
