I'm teaching myself to screen print and have done pretty good until I tried to put a red design on a black shirt. I've researched this but want to make sure I understand. To get the red to really pop and not have a funny off red look to it I need to put white down first? So does this mean I make a screen with the design a little smaller than my original and do white, let it dry then put my screen with the original that will be in red over the white?

Thanks for any advice, and yes please use baby talk I'm still learning.

Thanks

Both the above suggestions are great. I love discharge ink, it gives an awesome feel (actually...no feel) and it looks retro, but it doesn't pop as much as a red plastisol with a white underbase. Big advantage is you only need one screen and no flash.

A third option, that is somewhere in between the two, is Ryonets Ryopaque Red. These are very opaque inks that you print a layer of red, flash, and print another layer of red. One advantage is using only one screen, so less set up and lining up. It's not as bright as the white underbase though, but still pretty bright.

Good luck!

I use the opaque ink method unless my customer specifies otherwise. It's just more cost effective. Only need one screen. Still need to print flash print. The print isn't always as bright but it still looks great. Just my 2 cents.

I use the Ryonet RyOpaque colors for that. Red, Golden Yellow, etc.. Works Great! Print/ Flash/ Print for Bright pop. But you can even do a single ink pass with a clear pass after and still get a great result!

Highly recommend RyOpaques, they have saved me a ton of time + money.
