Re-create logo from t-shirt

3312 Views 25 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Mstevens_design
I have a client who needs me to re-create his logo. The only version he has is on a t-shirt. I have CS4 and I am having a really hard time tracing the logo. When I scanned it - the logo has taken on the texture of the t-shirt. I need a crisp logo to put on more t-shirts for him. I have tried to look for the fonts and graphic to re-create it - but have had no luck. I need this done asap. Here is the scanned image:

You may not be able to recreate it exactly but that flame in the backround can be found online as a vector and put text in front. If your customer does not have a clean file, you need to tell him that you will do the best you can to copy it. How are you going to print it. Vinyl, screen or transfer?
I am going to screen print. Do you think a transfer would be better? Also, I have looked for the flame in the background on shutterstock and istock - any more suggestions?
Its very possible but depending on how well you know your photoshop and are they wanting an exact replica or as close as possible? If you need help just holla!
I thought I knew photoshop really well... any tips? I think I have been spending too much time on this and I am just stumped - any tips you could pass on would be fantastic.

I did this in like 5 minutes so if you spent even a little more time you can def do it. :)

Well, the word ASPHALT is a common font called Impact. I would say that this print is an easy one even if I created the entire thing from scratch, fonts and all. To precisely recreate the beveled edges, I would use Xara. You could use Photoshop for that, but it would be lesser quality. The flames are a simple vector redraw. Draw the outer path, then do an offset paths operation to get the orange inner part. I think it's an hour and a half of work if I fiddled around with trying to absolutely perfect the Orange County beveled edges but I think Xara would nail that easily. You could probably use a time limited demo of Xara and not even have to buy it. That's the best tips I can think of.
Simpler solution is to go here learn to pull the image apart if you don't know how... This is a great tutorial. Fom there I would download "vector magic" you can upload two free images to vectorize your image and get cleaner lines. Might not be exact but should get you on your way. Hope that helps

This font should work very well for the "Orange County": Letterhead Fonts / LHF Quadrex / Prismatic Fonts

And as Stone said, Impact should work for Asphalt.

Then at worst, you have to create half the flame graphic with the pen tool and mirror it.
On some hard images from customers, I redraw it in illustrator. this way I can have a clean vector image for screen printing, embroidery, cutting vinyl, business cards or anything else they might want.
I take a little time to make it the best that I can. It's my reputation on the line. I get most of my business by word of mouth.
The more you do it, the faster and more easy it gets. It's our jobs to be the graphics gurus and impress people with what we can do!
I would redraw it on corel (or AI). Easier than tracing and cleaning up.

Exactly right! Redraw it in Illustrator or pay someone else to do it. First and foremost, the image is a photo from a shirt it looks like and you can clearly see that. That means you will have a harder time cleaning everything up and getting good separations out of it.

If you vectorize it, then it will make your image a lot cleaner and the print will look better because of that. Since it was printed by someone else, the client will expect that quality or more to the print and reusing someone's art wont get you a return client.

I would just re-draw it in Illustrator. It's not too complicated of an image. :)
I would redraw it too, but if we are too busy, I would send it to these guys www.artworksource.com they only charge 15-20 bucks and they usually have it back with in 24hrs. Time wise its cheaper for me to get them to do it ;)
Based on your minimum wage $15-20 is very very reasonable. I wouldn't pay a single cent for the navy seal team 5 logo though but that's because I have a more detailed version of it-took me 2 days though(including some modification for other seal teams).
lol. hard to find people that know how to use the programs anymore. :)
I envy all of you who can draw with a pen or pencil.

Oh yeah, Josh whomever you are... I drew that much of the logo in less than hour, in Adobe Illustrator 6 on a mac that built in 2003 running the old OS9... new software is no replacement for talent, speed, and knowing what you are doing. So there....

and you kids get off my lawn!
That is very true. Proficiency is more important to new features seldom used (if at all)
Hmmm. Guess I pissed off a guy named Josh that emailed me that I'm just a trouble maker.... really?

I redrew the logo (still needs tweaking and cleanup, don't know what how many color you want to keep it to, I used 4 color with a few halftones)...

here is the prelim version (a jpeg saved from my illustrator file)...

Just to be a jerk... its all jagged. You did a pretty poor job retracing the flames there. Plus in those flames, it looks to be a halftone of red overtop yellow to give it dimension and you didn't recreate that either :) Not bad for an hour though.

It has been a little while now, so I have to assume that he has it done already or the customer has moved on to someone else. But if we were to do it, we would be looking at about $30, $45 if you wanted separations done too.

To me, it isn't how fast you can do it, but if you can get it done and make it look the way it did. The customer clearly has something already printed with that design on it, so they know the way its supposed to look. If you cant match or beat that quality, then the customer will clearly see it.
