Does anyone know if you need to use fire retardant thread on a racing suit? A friend wants some minor embroidery on his fire suit and I couldn’t answer his question whether we needed to do that or not. He is checking with the track but has not gotten an answer back.

Yes, you have to use Nomex thread for embroidery, otherwise the integrity of the SFI rating is compromised because the regular thread is not flame retardant. You can get an additive to add to plastisol if you wanted to screen print logo & stuff on it too.

Even if you use fire resistant thread, the punctures from the needle will technically compromise the fire resistance of the suit. Your best bet is to make a patch and glue it on, that way you are not puncturing the suit.

Also remember, if you're going to use FR thread for the embroidery, you also have to use FR bobbins and Backing.
