Problem is I am running out of ink due to automatic frequent cleaning.. It usually does it when turned on at first and sometime does it when initiate about to print. Is this common with the Epson r1800?

Epson printers are designed to clean when power is turned on. It does have a memory so if you turn it on and then turn it back off and on soon after, it won't do another clean. Just don't turn it off!

It is also designed to periodically clean itself as well. From my experience it is based on both a time counter and shot counter. I don't know if this is true but this is what it appears to be on my R230. If I don't print for 2 days, it will always do an auto clean on the first print. But if I am printing heavy on a Saturday, it might auto clean twice during a 120 'page' print job. This is normal.

I am under the impression that these types of cleanings use much less ink than a forced cleaning but I am not sure where I read that.

I never turn my printer off. In fact, I am looking to buy a UPS soon so that I don't ever lose power in the middle of a print job cause that would suck!

Thanks for the reply! It is good to know,, I was trying to relocate the PE sensor which I am not having much luck with, thus prompted me to restart the printer too often. I did buy a bulk ink system but have not got around installing it.. By the way last year I purchased a backup power (battery) system from Costco, here in Arizona we get a lot of power outage during our monsoon season, so far I have not lost any work caused by power shortage..

Regards,
