PTA wants cheap shirts for fundraiser....

A friend of mine is the on the PTA at her kid's school and is in charge of a fundraiser for them. She's asked us to give her a quote on single color shirts. She used a company for shirts last time and while she didn't like the overall product she did like the price. The company charged $2.55 for a single color shirt up to 25 shirts and then down to $1.05 for 150 shirts and so on. Those prices seem way too cheap to me. But I imagine she did like the price considering they sold them for $10-$12 each. We have never been asked to supply shirts for a fundraiser so maybe that cost is typical. Not sure what we should come back with on pricing. Any opinions or advice would be very appreciated.

Maybe that was the price to print shirts that SHE provided. Otherwise she must have used someone that had no idea what they were doing. DO NOT TAKE THE JOB AND SUPPLY THE SHIRTS FOR THIS PRICE! The shirts will cost you more than that! PLEASE, DON'T DO IT !!!

We see that all the time.

We don't price match ever. NEVER.

Quote your normal price, get all the money up front and you are good to go.

:DGet the number of the company she used last time and sub all your work out to them.

We see this sort of thing all the time. Either your friend has no knowledge of how to negotiate and has gone in way too hard or she is thinking that by throwing a stupid price at you you will quote as low as you can go.
Or maybe the previous printers kid went to the school and he was printing at less than cost.

Than you all so for the input! She actually sent me the price list from the company. It was unreal! We absolutely would not have done it but I wanted to make sure this isn't the norm.

What DO you charge if it's a fundraiser?
My normal fundraiser charge for a regular Gildan 2000 is $6 for one or two print one side, $7 for one print or two print two sides, plus a $25 setup per color.

Thanks Rex! I'm assuming you keep the set up charge separate on the quote? I know some add it into the cost.
PTA's are sure tricky. And there are so many trying to sell to them! I used to do well with them when I could get $6.50 per shirt and same print on Front and back one color! But when they started getting them for $4.25 each, I had to let it go. We are doing this for a profit. And no one can offer the personal customer service that we can and that is worth something when their big cheap orders go wrong. Some have come back to me, but most not. Just because they are having a fund raiser, do not feel like you have to sacrifice your margins. You should be trying to raise your funds too so you can be there next year when the one that offered $4.25 is out of business!

Are you kidding? We fundraise for us, nobody else. We are a for profit business. Fastest way to go broke is to do that. If you want to offer a small discount, ok, but really?

Here is what we tell our 'Non-Profits':

We need their 501(c)3 number, an annual financial statement of donations to revenue, paid out salaries and stipends, and a statement of what they will use the money for the fundraiser for and an afterward statement with receipts of donations and only then will we donate the discount on the goods sold. We will otherwise offer a small discount and they can sell from there.

You will find most 'fundraisers' are nothing of the sort and they will move on to more gullible vendors.

Most 'Non Profits' in the USA donate almost nothing to their stated purpose. PTA is no exception.

By the way, in California, Non Profits pay sales tax not matter what they say to you. There are no exceptions.
