Preparing .jpeg for color seperation with a black background

Hey everyone,

Just got this graphic for a customer. His old screen printer passed away and all I have to work with is this jpeg, no psd or illustrator files. I need to separate the graphic off the black background while still keeping the black inside. Basically the skeleton on the motorcycle needs to be on a transparent background so I can add the text later.

My limited Photoshop skills are getting the best of me. I'm sure it can be done but I've hit a brick wall here.

Any thoughts or links to tutorials are appreciated!

Ok, I was just playing with this image.
Try your background eraser and I was getting the best results with 33-35 tolerance setting.

The only thing I could really come up with was to convert it to greyscale and then invert it and then convert it to a bitmap. That gives you your white screen. Then you could just use your magic want to select the colors in the flag. Is this print going on black? If so my way should work. I couldn't find any way to erase the background without losing the subtle shading in the image.

I'd delete all the black, add a new layer underneath, and roughly paint black back in. Since it is under the existing colours, it should be masked so you just need to be tidy on the edges - you should be able to fill the rest in. That should recreate the black on just the image.

Then you can colour separate as usual.
